These are our picks for the best summer shorts patterns! They were chosen with the help of real kids. For more awesome patterns, check out the Tween PDF Pattern MasterList.
Some patterns in this post are affiliate links. That means if you purchase a pattern from one of my links, I could receive a small commission; at no additional cost to you. I display my affiliates buttons on my right side bar too…in case you feel like shopping later:)
If you design tween sized patterns or own a fabric shop; I’m planning a Back To School sewing giveaway in August. Let me know if you’d like to sponsor the prize package!
Gidget Shorts by Felicity Sewing Patterns, size 2-14
Gidget Shorts are cute and girly. The bias trim is a fun detail; and your sporty girls will love it without the bows too.
Girls Chino Shorts from blaverry, size 9 months-12 years
My daughter found blaverry patterns and fell in love with the Girls Chino Shorts. The entire 2014 Collection is sophisticated and cool. (Look for a review of a blaverry pattern in June.)
Racerback Crop Tank & Jazz Shorts by TumblenTwirl
Jazz Shorts are so versatile. They work for everyday wear or swim gear. TumblenTwirl has the largest selection of dance and sportswear patterns available for tweens.
Hampton Shorts by Greenstyle Creations, size 2-14
Hampton Shorts are Julian’s pick, because “Everybody would wear these. They’re cool.” Moms will appreciate the simple, comfy design and drawstring waist for easy fit and longer wear.
The Summer Sailors from BG Originals, 6 months-12 years
I’ve admired the Summer Sailors for sooo long! Easily customizable, these flat front shorts have a tailored look.
Lakeside Cargo Shorts by Ellie Inspired, size 2-12
Cargo shorts are a staple! Kids could just live in these, right?!
Paperbag Shorts from Elle Garrett Designs, 18 months-12
Simple, quick Paperbag Shorts. I’d spend a day assembly line sewing these and fill a drawer for summer! It would be fun to play with different fabrics too.
Long Beach Board Shorts from Terra’s Treasures
Long Beach Board Shorts are so cute- and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Its a summer shorts pattern that is truly co-ed with a broad size range, 3 months -14 years.
Sassy Shorts from Ginger Baby Patterns, 12 months- 12 years
Sassy Shorts are basic shorts with pockets kids can’t live without. GingerBaby Patterns are the most well written instructions I’ve ever used. See my review of the Active Classics Everyday Knit Pants & Shorts? for a peek inside the PDF.
Classic Chinos from Peekaboo Patterns, 3 months-12 years
Classic Chinos from PAB are still on my “to sew” list. From what I hear; this is the pattern to learn zip flys. My Tween Sewing Survival Guide has a list of sewing techniques I’ve been working on- essential to sewing for older kids. Zip flys are the last thing I need to conquer!
Chapters Long Pants / Shorts from Petit Bebe, newborn-12
Chapsters are really fun. It’s not as easy to mix fabric prints on boys clothing; so the back yoke and curved side seam are a great design element.
Buccaneer BBall Shorts from Patterns for Pirates
Buccaneer BBall Shorts have a huge size range, from 3 months up to 16 years. Patterns For Pirates has become such a heavy hitter for tween sewing. There is also an adorable girls version of basketball shorts, the Sporty Shorties. I’m dying to review them for you soon!
Readers, please bear with me while I make some upgrades to my Tween Pattern MasterList. Now that we’re on our 3rd month of this series, our list is getting longer. I’ll be dividing our list up into categories so we can find what we need faster. I have lots of good stuff in store for you! As always, thanks so much for your visit.
