Ojai Wrap For Selfish Sewing Week

Ojai Wrap: Shawl Collar Cardigan sewing pattern by Justine Marie Patterns

This is the Ojai Wrap pattern from Justine Marie Patterns. It’s a short sleeved shawl collar cardigan with a little bit of a high low hem. There’s an optional button tab for the sleeve, too.

Justine writes at one of my favorite blogs, Sew Country Chick. It was among┬áthe first sewing blogs I ever read. I like it because there are so many different things; like pattern drafting, women’s wear, costuming…I never get bored.

I could’ve made a size down, but I tend to wear cardigans with a slouchy fit and normally buy a size bigger. I like for kids to climb up in my lap, and then I can wrap my cardigan around them like a blanket.

I used a loose sweater knit in a light cream color. It’s soft and drapey…I’m a real sucker for texture. I love this fabric!

This is more of a spring cardigan because the fabric isn’t doing much to keep me warm. I made it to pair with tanks and dresses. I have a lot of layers on so I may add a photo to this post later; without the bulky clothes. I’m too proud to bare my pasty white legs in public; and too self indulgent to suffer being cold.

Below is a closeup of the fabric (so pretty) and the sequin trim I used to stabilize the shoulders. It’s a fun detail, and it really helps the super stretchy sweater knits to keep their shape. I wrote a tutorial here: How To Sew Sequin Trim.

I made several other women’s clothing projects, with every intention of showing you this week. I’m barely squeaking this post in…we’ll see if I can get more photos this week. I’m excited to read about and see what everyone else makes though!

I like sewing things for me now; which was not the case one year ago. The online sewing community really motivated me to keep going. I wear something I made at least a couple times a week, and that feels nice. So hurray for Selfish Sewing Week!

  1. Such a cute sweater!! It looks so soft and I love the texture and the added sequins!!! Your selfish sewing is awesome and looks better than anything that could be found in a store!!! Great job and beautiful photos!!!!

  2. You’ve convinced me – I have to buy the pattern. Now all I have to figure out is where I can buy suitable fabric in a real life store so I can see it first. Your version should take you through three seasons, layering or not as the weather dictates. Love how you’ve styled it in this photo shoot!!! Awesome photos, Amy.

  3. That is a pretty knit and I love the trim you added! Perfect wrap for spring and even summer, but I actually like how you styled with layers in those photos. Those earrings are perfect touch!
I am trying to sew something for myself this week too. I will see if I can actually finish it. But taking photos is another problem…cold and wet days are against us!

  4. Amy I love this sweater knit! You are so brave. I do not think I would attempt sewing with this loose sweater knit. I love this for a summer pairing with a tank or t-shirt. Adds a little “dress up” to the usual.
P.S. I love the sunset! Hopefully the weather breaks soon. You will get spring before we do, but we have lost several inches of snow over the last 2-3 days. Hope springs eternal!
