Pirate Costume Reveal!

Pirate Costume Reveal!

I’ve been working on these costumes forever, and I can’t wait to share with you!

Here are Bella & cousin Julian having a sword fight.

A few more shots…

(You can click here to see how I made her shirt.)

Bella has a tutu that I couldn’t get her to wear. I guess tutus & sword fights don’t mix.

I couldn’t get a pirate shirt on Julian, he felt like wearing his T-shirt. Shoes didn’t happen either. And that’s okay.

Evan’s a mess. He wouldn’t even put his costume on. Three year olds, sheesh. But hey, we don’t sweat the small stuff around here.

I was so nervous making Mr. SewsNBows costume. I’m not really sure why! He has really good craftsmanship in everything he does, so I worked hard to make sure all my stitches were perfect, my seams lined up, etc.

But he took one look and gave me a big ole smile! He was a very happy guy. And I think he’s about the handsomest pirate ever.

My costume took the longest. Oh, the corset gave me fits. It laces in front and back. I need help to take it on and off. I got stuck in it once, with one arm above my head. Very awkward. Here’s the back:

Dont look too closely or you’ll see all my technical difficulties. It definitely gives me good posture though. (Especially since I can’t bend over when I’m wearing it! )

I added a lacy bustle to the muslin skirt, with gold buttons. It’s a circle skirt with another circle ruffle. I didn’t finish edges or iron. Pirates don’t iron!

I didn’t need any more bulk on top, so I opted for sleeves, no shirt. I used a Greecian sleeve pattern and added elastic on top & bottom. I added lace to the cuffs.

Here’s the best part: I made secret pirate undies!! (They are just boxer shorts with elastic in the leg holes.) But they keep me decent since a circle skirt tends to have a lot of movement, and I tend to have to chase kids around.

And not to be indecent, but they really look like old timey underwear with the corset.

I confess, my corset is made pretty sloppy…but I sort of love how everything came together. It turned out just like my sketch. It had the most details…but guess who got all the attention when we went to the parade?

This guy. That’s why I’m stabbing him.

He survived though, and we made up.

I sure hope you enjoyed this post. I did! Let me know if you want any tutorials. Unless its the corset. I need a few tutorials on those!
