Pullover Vs. Poncho
Did you read the Sock Monkey Dilemma? Last week, I was debating what to do with some adorable fleece I have.
Not sure why I asked. As soon as I wrote the post, I went straight to the sewing table and chopped the hoodie pattern. I “eyeball guessed” the plan. Lets hope it works!
Since the front has a zipper, and I want a pullover, I folded over an inch of the bodice center front. The zipper allowance may have as much as a 2″ allowance, but I just got rid of an inch.
I added 4 inches to the bottom of the bodice front & back. The sleeve cuff and waistband piece of this are 4″, and the are meant to be folded in half lengthways. So I should have 2 extra inches, plus an extra 3/8. (From the bodices original seam allowance.)
The next modification? This facing piece. First, I stared at it. Then I remembered the first time I used this fabric on a girls nightgown…and this stuff will kind of just fold over for the neckline. So, on second thought, I’m going without the facing.
I finished up yesterday. My blog buddy Rachel over at Once Upon A Sewing Machine told me she loves to “frankenstein” patterns…but I confess I’ve not had much luck so far. But at least this isn’t a total wadder.
He’s so handsome!
The hoodie is too small for Bella. Its slightly girly for Julian, but Im sure it will be snuggly for pajamas. I’m making another one now with the following modifications:
The bodice does not need to be taken in one inch. You will need even more ease than i guessed-so that it comes on and off easily.
The neckline needed to be cut bigger. (I also lost some neck-room by folding it over an inch! How did i miss that?!!) I didn’t realize til this hoodie was ready to hem at the neckline- that’s why you see a weird, not quite v-neck.
I don’t like on my the bulk in the shoulders and the v shaped neck. For a boy, I’ll have to straighten the side seams where there’s a slight curve, but i have no idea how to boy-ify the shoulders.
He likes it though. Whatevs, I’m off to make dinner and do laundry. Two thumbs down to responsibility!!
