Girls Luna Loungewear + My Fabric Designs

Check out the girls version of the Luna Loungewear pattern by Love Notions. Bella likes her set as much as I like mine!

Luna Loungewear pattern for girls, by Love Notions

This is the size 14 tester version, and the straps have now been moved in slightly for a perfect fit. I know the fit is perfect because this girl ^ had me sew a couple more tanks for school. They’re in the laundry basket every time I try to get photos.

The similar RTW tank tops she wears are $10 when I catch them on sale, eek. It’s the built in shelf bra feature that she loves. I’m infinitely relieved I have a new go-to pattern, because her tanks are in heavy rotation.

Luna Loungewear, Love Notions Patterns

I’m an affiliate for Love Notions Patterns. When I showed you my women’s Luna Loungewear set, several of you bought the pattern from my link in the post. I received a commission for those purchases, and I wanted to say thank you. You got a great pattern, and helped me maintain this blog.

I’ll link this pattern at the bottom of the post, in case you want to buy it. (I think you do.)

I used cotton slinky knit from My Fabric Designs. The cotton slinky knit is lighter than their interlock, and has 6% spandex for a lot more stretch. It’s perfect for Luna Loungewear. I love that I can shop prints or design my own fabric; then choose between 26 different types of fabric. If you shop there, I highly recommend getting a swatch book. It makes planning a sewing project so easy.

Since I told you how great this pattern is in a previous post, I really have to show off my coverstitch work. I haven’t tried all the things my machine can do yet, but I’m getting the hang of the basics. It was tricky to cleanly start and stop the stitch work on the faux fly. (I had to rip it out once.)

As for the construction, I prefer the self binding straps option on this tank over the fold over elastic I used for mine. It’s nice and clean, wears well, and was easier than I thought.

I used a piece of crochet lace for the drawstring until I find some cording. I attached the two lace ends to a piece of skinny elastic in back. The elastic doesn’t show, but it helps relieve some stress on my button holes for now. The lace looks cute, but it’s not ideal.

The buttonholes use a piece of interfacing to stabilize the button hole, and it’s a great design feature. A fun color drawstring with matching coverstitching is Bella’s latest request.

Luna Loungewear for Ladies by Love Notions

Let’s talk about Luna Loungewear for ladies, friends.  I don’t buy many sewing patterns or do pattern testing often; but I needed this pattern in my stash. I knew the women’s and girls version would both get a lot of use in my house.

Luna Loungewear for ladies by Love Notions patterns

I’m an affiliate for Love Notions patterns, wanna know why? I can choose my bust size and sew them right out of the box. There are only a few women’s pattern designers I really trust, and Love Notions is at the top of the list. I signed up for testing right away when I saw Luna Loungewear. Who doesn’t need lounge shorts and tanks?

Luna Loungewear

There’s a built in shelf bra option for the tank and nightie, and the bralette can be sewn on its own too.

The tank straps can be made with fold over elastic or self binding. I used f.o.e. for this version, but I prefer the self binding I used for my daughters set.

Side note: I thought the teeny straps would be really tricky, but they were pie with Tami’s instructions. I’ll use that method a lot from now on.

The shorts can be made with knit or wovens. And there are pockets because the world ends without pockets. They have an elastisized waist and faux fly with optional drawstring.

The shorts are great. The front and back pieces are graded perfectly. I notice issues with the rise in some indie brands, but none of that here. In fact, these shorts seem to be universally flattering.

So it’s confession time. I really don’t intend to wear my Luna Loungewear as pajamas. I wear camisoles or tanks under everything, so they go all year. You’ll see more of this pattern from me, in girls and women’s sizes.

For reference, this is a size large with the built in bralette. The fabric is from Girl Charlee, purchased last year during their holiday sale.

You can purchase the Luna Loungewear for ladies pattern here. If you sew for littles, I highly reccomend the ladies & girls bundle.  I’ll show you Bella’s set soon!

Modify A Womens T-Shirt Pattern For Tween Girls

Laundry Day Tee from Love Notions

I made my daughter this quick tee using a women’s pattern. It’s easy to modify a womens t-shirt pattern for tween girls, if you know what fit issues might arise.

My baby is starting to fit into junior clothing, but there are still a lot of fit problems. I watch the neckline because it’s sometimes too low or wide. Shoulders can too broad. There is usually too much length in sleeves and pant legs. Bust is an obvious area to consider, but its much less of a problem in t-shirts and knitwear. In these areas, younger girls haven’t “caught up” yet growth wise, even if her measurements are on the size chart.

Laundry Day Tee from Love Notions Patterns

I started with the Laundry Day Tee from Love Notions* using the women’s size small. You can adjust any basic tee pattern. If you prefer not to mess with adjustments, check out the Lil LDT* for girls. (Affiliate links)

How To Adjust a Womens T-Shirt Pattern For Tween Girls

Crappy drawing I made with a touchscreen app^

To make the adjustments, I held a well fitting t-shirt up to my traced LDT pattern. I narrowed and raised the neckline, and narrowed the outer shoulders about a half inch. I shortened the front a bit too, I can’t remember how much. Use your t-shirt as a guide, and don’t forget to account for seam allowances.

Narrowing the shoulders means the armcye gets bigger. I needed to take a quarter inch of the front and back side seams to account for that, although adjusting the sleeve would be the proper method. Use a pattern that fits the bust measurement for the least amount of armcye/sleeve fitting work. It getting easier as girls gets closer to “true” women’s sizing.

Girls t-shirt, finished with elastic lace trim

I used elastic lace to finish the sleeve, neckline, and hem; and after I dyed it with Rit DyeMore. I’m pretty much obsessed with dying my trims. I bought white elastic in bulk a while back and I have all the Rit colors to mix and match. Below you can see how easy it is to control the color saturation. The lighter elastic was dipped for about 30 seconds, and the brighter elastic got 2-3 minutes.

Dyeing Elastic With Rit DyeMore: Elastic on the right was dipped for 30 seconds. Elastic on the left was dipped for a few minutes. It's easy to control the saturation!

The fabric came from JoAnn’s or Hobby Lobby remnant section. I can’t remember, again! I didn’t feel like hemming it because the white “stripes” sort of flip around and I didn’t feel fussy the day I made this shirt. I really like the elastic trim finish!

That’s about all for this post- I’m super busy cleaning tornado debris but I’ll be back Monday with my Sew Fashionable series; and I can’t wait to show you my Kimono!

Laundry Day Tee | Love Notions Patterns

Laundry Day Tee

If you’re looking for a basic long sleeved knit top, the Laundry Day Tee from Love Notions is a perfect staple!

Laundry Day Tee | Sewing Pattern Review

The Laundry Day Tee has a scoop or V-neck, 3 sleeve lengths, and a t-shirt or tunic length top. The Love Notions blog has a free cowl neck add on, and I’ve even seen them modified into cute dresses. I predict some of those in my spring/summer wardrobe.

Laundry Day Tee | Coverstitched Hem

I made this my LDT in a size L and used coverstitching on the neck, sleeves, and hem. The fabric is from Girl Charlee and you may recognize it from this raglan.

Laundry Day Tee

I’ve been faking a loose flowy top in more fitted patterns, using my fitted to flowy top tutorial to adjust patterns. I wrote a tutorial to add gussets to t-shirts too!

The Laundry Day Tee does all the work for me though. It’s fitted through the bust and then tapers out slightly at the side seams for loose fit across my muffin area. If you look at the tester photos, it looks good on all shapes and sizes (not just the muffin-esque.)

Laundry Day Tee | Sewing Pattern Review

I cut Love Notions patterns based on my full bust measurement, and so far I’ve they’ve always fit the first time, straight out of the box.

Laundry Day Tee

My only gripe is my design placement when I cut this top. I didn’t have an option to match my seams or sleeves, working with a small bit of leftover fabric. The largest part of the design landed across the bust, and the star/flower things landed most unfortunatly. Most people wouldn’t notice, but sewing folks do! I’m not sure I can get past it, but I layer a lot.

Laundry Day Tee

I’ll always need t-shirts, and a quick sew like the Laundry Day Tee is therapeutic. Lately though, I’m feeling ready to up my sewing skills. I ordered a bra kit from Bra-makers Supply. I can always come back to t-shirts in between fit disasters, right?! I’m pretty sure it will take lots of fails to get it just right.

I’m an affiliate of Love Notions Patterns. That means that if you make a purchase through my links, I’ll recieve a small commission at no additional cost to you.
