My New Camera

A self-indulgent blather by Amy Mayen

This was one of the first photos taken with my new camera. I came home one day and Mr. SewsNBows got me the camera & all the equipment I’ve been coveting for so long. Ain’t he sweet? Gaw, I just want to squish him up and hang him from my rear view mirror cuz I love him so much!

(Paula Abdul said that once…anybody remember that?)

I’ve been messing with it a while now…getting more comfortable. There sure are a lot of buttons though. And nobody ever accused me of being the brightest light bulb in the box!

I thought having the fancy camera would make my pictures automatically awesome.

Don’t get me wrong- it does help! But, it turns out there’s actual skill required. So thanks for hangin’ in there with me.

So far this week I’ve made a boy doll outfit and a top for Sofie using the Scirocco pattern from Figgys. I need to get photos for you…

Plus I need to do a hardcore photo-shoot for the Sew Many Books series over at Nap Time Creations! Emily set up a Pinterest board and everything. That means its officially a thing. An important thing.

I’m really excited about my project…but super nervous because I want my photos to capture the spirit of the book I chose. It’s a special book. I just need my post to turn out as good as it is in my head.

Did ya’ll see my guest post over at Crafty Meggy’s the other day? If you hoard patterns, you better go make sure you have all my top picks for free patterns on the web.

Oh, one last thing before I go…then I promise this post will be over! I made jam all day yesterday, and canned tomatoes & okra in the pressure cooker. I feel a little accomplished for that. Generally, I just avoid the kitchen and food related tasks. So, yeah…a little proud!

What’ve you been up to this week?

I Got Nominated For A Liebster Award!!!

By Amy Mayen

Kathie from Sassy Little Lady nominated moi for a Liebster award! Thanks Kathy! I’m honored to receive it.

Here are the rules for receiving this award:

* Tell 11 random facts about yourself
* Answer the 11 questions the nominator has asked you.
* Choose 11 new bloggers (with less than 200 followers) to pass
the award to and link them in your post.
*Create 11 new questions for the bloggers you pass the award to.
*Go back to their page and tell them about the award.
*No tag backs.

11 Random Facts About Me:

1}I’m left handed. My mother raised me to believe that this makes me freakishly talented and creative.

2} I rarely read the same book or watch a movie twice. The exception is Gone With The Wind- the book & the movie.

3} Somedays, I put my hair in a ponytail without bothering to brush it. Then I put on fab earrings to make up for it for the messy hair.

4} I was born a twin, but my sister didn’t survive. I always wonder what she would’ve been like. Mom named her Mirella, which makes her sound like a wicked stepsister. But I’m pretty sure she would’ve been sweet.

5} If calories didn’t count, I’d put cheese or butter on almost everything.

6} Speaking of butter, Paula Deen is my favorite. I wish I could kidnap her and lock her away to concoct buttery goodness for me to enjoy.

7} I wanted to be a fashion designer since I was 8 years old. I used to make paper dolls!

8} My 8 year old is smarter than me. Seriously, you should see her homework.

9} I’m scared of heights, traffic, and getting old, getting sick, and dying.

10} I’m cold all the time. I’m cold unless its 80* or higher outside! Brr! I’m freezing to death right now & it’s 65* outside!

11}My best/worst thing about me is, I weigh decisions out for a long time. I research, then I plan… and once I make a decision I rarely change my mind.

Questions from Kathie:

1} If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Egypt I think. Maybe Rome. Israel. Can’t decide!

2} What is your favorite type of food?
Oh man, there hardly any food I don’t like. Pass!

3} What is your favorite season?

4} How did you come up with your blog name?

I was selling a lot of bows locally, and I had started sewing again. It seemed easy to remember.

5} You have $500 but you have to spend it in one store. What store would it be?

H&H gun range-I’d put it with the rest of my imaginary money and order a new piece of hardware.

6} What is your favorite drink?

Unless you meant grown up drink?
White Russian.

7} You have to write a book about your life. What is the title?

No idea! My life is pretty normal & happy. It would be a boring book!

8} What is your favorite quality about yourself?
That I never want to stop learning.

9} Why did you start blogging?
I just like to hear myself talk.

10} What is your favorite dessert?
All of them.

11} What is your hidden talent?
I barely have any “exposed” talent! But if I could pick one, I’d be a great singer, & win X-Factor.

I’ll be on the lookout for my blogs to nominate. Does anyone know how to find out how many followers they have?

It may a little while- we are on Spring break for 2 weeks. It’s hard to get anything done with all these brats running around!

Please send me an email if you know a good blog who should be nominated!

Ruffly Baby Outfit & Random Musings

By Amy Mayen

I made this outfit last summer when I first started sewing again.

I love how it makes Sofie look so fluffy and cuddly.

It’s not my best work, but I could barely operate a home sewing machine back then. I was so used to a big industrial machine- I always though I’d break my little Singer! A sewing machine I can pick up? What?!!

Now I’m so used to my little machine I don’t think I could use anything else.

Unless it was a fancy Bernina…have you seen the sexy ads? It’s the Lamborghini of sewing machines right?

This outfit was featured by the fabulous Amie of Pinkapotamus! Check out her awesome site!

Bella’s 8th Birthday Party

I’m the best mom ever.

“Best party ever mom!”

It’s true. I rock.

But I’m the worst blogger ever. I didn’t run around with the camera frantically getting pin worthy shots.

I passed the camera around and asked everyone else to do the dirty work…while I danced with hubby and spent time with family and friends.

I don’t regret it. I had the best time, and so did Bella!

Here’s the PVC pipe photo display I told you about. This also works great at craft shows.

I took a couple pics when we were halfway done setting up. Don’t Edson’s snowflakes look great?

By the time we had all the pink stuff up I barely even noticed the yellow walls. Something like that triggers my crazy gene & usually I’d lose sleep over it.

More pink stuff going up on the walls. It was getting close to appointment time and I couldn’t get anything to stick. Panic ensued and a couple ugly words came out of my mouth. Best mom ever was nowhere to be found at this moment.

I always like to do a giant birthday card.

See it starting to come together?

I need to stop right here and say thanks to my friend Cynthia. She stayed long after I had to leave to finish setting up. I owe her SO BIG. Her hubby brought all the sound equipment and managed all our music. A fog machine even showed up. It was amazing. I hope I get rich so I can pay for their kids college or something. I have no idea how to repay them.

A list of awesome things I wish I took photos of:

The finished room! (I was late because I couldn’t find my contacts and I got puked on a little bit when I was heading out. No big deal. )

The DJ booth. It was really cool.

Bella’s table. We had it decorated so cute with a reserved sign…we made it really special. Bella got to invite her friends from school to sit with her. I loved it! (Cynthia’s design, btw.)

The cake! It was so pretty!

fighting over piƱata candy

Here’s my favorite photo. This is Bella, past her bedtime, hopped up on cake and candy.

Now you know why I limit sugar in my house. Seriously. Look at her.

I’m back to sewing now that we’ve survived the party. I made a romper & I’m halfway through a summer dress for Bella. I couldn’t be happier to be back at my sewing table.

Although, my nephew Evan told me he wants me to make him a carnival for his March birthday….and Evan is the nephew that brings me cookies, flowers, and steals his moms nail polish for me when I ask him too. So I gotta make him the biggest carnival ever. If you want to see my ideas coming together, follow my Party Ideas board on Pinterest!

Excuses and Such

This week, I’ve been working on a little girls custom dress order, and a Christmas dress for Bella. I also want to decorate my Christmas tree for Thanksgiving, and make an advent calendar for the kids.

Here are my excuses for not getting much done:

1. My brother in law put new wood floors in my house, (its gorgeous!) and it put my sewing room out of commission.

2. I had to spring clean to before I set up my tree. It’s a law that you have to clean house top to bottom before you drag all the tree pretties out.

3. I needed zippers for both projects and was too lazy to go buy them until Thursday.

So, since I don’t have much to show you this week, I decided I’d just share some random photos and things. You know, so yal don’t think I dropped off the face of the earth.

These are clothespin magnets the kids made me. These two are the only ones that landed on my fridge, since the boys took most of theirs home. The one on the left was made by Bella, and little Evan made the one on the right.

I bought 3 pairs of kids craft scissors the other day so they wouldn’t fight over them making ornaments this year. I just have to tell you-Evan was so excited to have his own pair. I’ve always been a bit nervous to let him use scissors- but he’s 3 years old now. He almost had tears of gratitude in his eyes. He held them like they were the Holy Grail.

Here’s Bella playing with her LeapPad. You can tell I interrupted her and she wants me to go away. (She’s making an important documentary. About slugs.)

Yup, we really do wear cowboy boots all year round in Oklahoma. Oh, and that’s Champ’s butt. He likes his butt or tail in all my pictures.

Here’s the big ole Oklahoma City Thunder bow I promised to show you in my last post. Check out some other Thunder bows here.

Sweetest thing ever! On a wall in the arts district:

While Bella was in dance, I stopped in Urban Wineworks on N.W. 16th. Often, on Saturdays, I loiter outside and relax under their umbrellas.

Well today I stopped inside for brunch. Now, I’m not a food photographer and didn’t do this plate justice…but this is deep fried French toast……yum! I’m pretty sure I’m going to hell for eating it.

This should be illegal. Oh, it was so good. They have nice, relaxing music and a cool ambiance. In fact, I wrote most of this post while I sat in there munching my French toast & bacon.
